Here in Spain, everyone thinks the famous Spanish orange is the best and highest source of vitamin C, but in reality, there are many fruits and vegetables that contain more vitamin C than the orange itself. We can name, among others, lemons, kiwis, and bell peppers, which are known for their high vitamin C content, but they are not the only ones, and they are not even the best. Here are the 5 best sources of vitamin C. And here's a hint: they are all fruits.

Camu-Camu

Have you ever heard of camu camu? Probably not, as even some indigenous people in the Amazon region where this fruit grows rejected it because it was too bitter.

Researchers have recently discovered that this vitamin C champion plant provides 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams of dried fruit, which is approximately 40 times more than oranges. However, this product is only available in health food stores or pharmacies as supplements containing camu camu extract.

Acerola

The Amazon rainforest also grows this fruit, the acerola cherry, which is somewhat better known today than camu-camu. This fruit contains between 1,300 and 1,700 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of fruit and ranks second in the world for vitamin C. It also contains about 30 times more vitamin C than an orange. The acerola cherry is not related to our native cherry in Spain; these fruits are very sensitive, as they survive transport to Central Europe only as juice and are added to vitamin-enriched drinks. Dietary supplements with acerola are also available in pharmacies.

Rosehip

The fruits of the wild rose, the rosehip , contain approximately 1,250 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of fruit. For best results, they are best eaten fresh in the form of jam or tea , as the seeds must be removed first, resulting in a fresh, sour taste. However, the tiny fuzz between the seeds must also be removed first, as they can cause itching.

Sea buckthorn

Its orange-colored fruits are used to make jam, juice, liqueur, vegetable oil, and even skin cream. Sea buckthorn contains 200 to 800 mg of vitamin C per 100 g.

Guava

The guava fruit is native to South America but is now found almost everywhere in tropical countries. Its fruit contains 275 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of pulp. Guavas are initially green, then turn yellow when ripe and are ready to eat. To eat them, remove the waxy skin and the seeds inside.

The 100 mg of Vitamin C per day rule

Adults are recommended to take 100 mg of vitamin C daily, and this requirement can be easily met with seasonal fruits and vegetables.
