It's a tea that hasn't been roasted, it's barely oxidized, with floral notes and a twisted shape. It's somewhere between green tea and oolong tea , although it's often considered the latter due to its mild flavor. In this post, we'll tell you what Baozhong tea is.

Its Chinese name means "wrapped type," which refers to the process of wrapping its leaves during drying. Also known as spring tea, baozhong has a floral and melon-like aroma, is rich and smooth. In Taiwan, its leaves are harvested in late March.

The normal thing is to infuse 1 tablespoon of tea for 3 minutes and immediately remove the leaves, so its flavor will not be as intense.

Origin of Baozhong tea

Its production takes place in the Wenshan Mountains of Taiwan, specifically in the Pinglin district. Interestingly, the capital, Taipei, is where most Baozhong tea is produced. Its origin is unclear, but it appears to be a generic name given to teas that were packaged and sold commercially.

Over time, it spread across the island. The original tea is produced in Wenshan, where competitions are even held each season. Its quality varies greatly; it has an intense floral aroma that is stronger than that of high-mountain teas, with a fresh, floral, country flavor.

Baozhong loose tea

This tea has suffered the same fate as the famous Chinese Tie Guanyin tea. It was originally intensely roasted, but as it became lighter and fresher, the roastiness was lost. This was because roasted teas preserved better over time.

Many Taiwanese tea lovers keep it aged in their homes, even allowing it to remain undrinked for decades. Despite being such a delicate tea, it is prepared using settled, boiled water, but its steeping time is shorter than that of mountain tea.

It is prepared at temperatures ranging from 90º to 95º C, but lower temperatures can be used, for example 80º C, and you can try which one you prefer best.

You should consider the amount of tea you drink throughout the day, because being a stimulant, it can aggravate certain conditions, especially if consumed in excess. It contains theine, which, although less potent than caffeine, is still a stimulant.

It should not be consumed if you suffer from ulcers.

It causes vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency.

Excessive drinking can cause kidney damage.

It is not recommended for people who are allergic to caffeine or tannins.

It's advisable not to drink tea after 3 p.m. However, not all teas have the same amount of caffeine, so their stimulating properties will vary. Baozhong tea doesn't have very high caffeine levels. It's recommended to drink one to two cups a day.

How to prepare Baozhong tea

Preparing Baozhong tea is very simple: use potable water that has not yet reached a boil (90°C). This helps preserve its active ingredients and its characteristic flavor. If the temperature is too high, its polyphenols become destabilized and their effectiveness is reduced.

The most intense antioxidant action is achieved after just three minutes of infusion. It can be drunk cold, brewing it hot and then letting it cool. The perfect cup is prepared like this:

  1. Heat the water until it barely boils.
  2. Turn off the heat and add the tea leaves.
  3. Let it infuse for 3 minutes.
  4. Taste if you like it that way; if you want it stronger, let it steep for longer. Don't let it steep for more than 10 minutes.
